OUR
HISTORY
The
Lightning Gun project started life in Adelaide, Australia
in 2010
when CEO and Founder Adam Weigold first concieved of a Laser Powered
EMP weapon and its significant potential for non-lethal military
applications. Small scale experiments were performed using a 10 Watt
class laser platform to prove the principle of the technology and
validate its potential for missile countermeasure applications. Within
12 months these small scale experiments had proved highly encouraging
and a new Directed Energy Weapons technology called Laser Guided and
Powered EMP (LGPE) had been invented.
In November 2011 Dr Weigold relocated operations to the San Francisco /
Silicon Valley area in the US
to proceed
with the next stage of the Lightning Gun project - to scale
LGPE
technology to real world power
levels. In December 2011 Lightning Gun Inc. was incorporated in the US
and the first provisional patent application detailing the
LGPE invention was filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
OUR FUTURE
Lightning
Gun is now developing ways to generate funding to establish
the research infrastructure required for large scale LGPE
experiments. Extrapolating our small-scale experimental data with
theoretical modelling indicates that
a 1kW class laser platform will be required to create a large
enough EMP pulse to effectively destroy a missiles electronic circuits
with
sufficient range and accuracy. This means the laser platform
must
be scaled up in output power by a factor of approximately 100. This in
turn
means the estimated cost of large scale experiments will increase by a
factor of 20 to more than US$5 million over 2-3 years. We
intend to raise this funding via a combination of (a)
Crowdfunding Projects, (b)
Sales of Science Fiction Publications and (c) US
Government Research
Grants.
At Lightning Gun Inc. we want to turn science
fiction into reality using an organic business model with no
reliance on bankers or venture capitalists. In short, we want to do it
our way!
BOARD
OF DIRECTORS
Dr.
Adam Weigold (USA)
Founder and CEO of Lightning Gun Inc., Dr. Adam
Weigold is
a laser physicist, author and serial entrepreneur
with over 20 years startup experience in the Australian and US
laser industries. He has
been CEO, CTO and founder of 5 technology start-ups including
industrial and military laser contractor Photon Engineering,
fiber-optics
manufacturer Fiberbyte (now
Chronologic), telecom service provider Nomad Networks, laser components
supplier Southern Cross Lasers and research incubator Critical Mass
Investments. Adam has a strong
record for building profitable businesses via organic funding
and
equity funding models. He founded Photon Engineering in 1994 as a
single person entity and organically grew it into a major regional
player with
over 25% of the Australian laser market when it
was acquired by public company Silex Systems in 2004. Adam has
also acted as the
exclusive Australasian representative
for many US laser manufacturers including JDS Uniphase, Iridex and
Northrop Grumman. He has numerous
scientific journal and industry publications and has 7 issued patents
in the fields of solid-state lasers, fiber optic
communication networks, computer bus architecture and photonic test
& measurement. Dr Weigold
has a PhD in Laser Physics from Macquarie University (1992) and served
6
years as board director and industry representative for the Australian
Optical
Society.
Prof.
Erich Weigold (Australia)
One of
the worlds most pre-eminent physicists, Professor Erich
Weigold has made a massive contribution
to the areas of atomic, molecular and condensed matter physics
(including pioneering the field of electron momentum spectroscopy).
Erich has been honoured with many awards throughout his career
including the
Humboldt Prize in Germany and the Lyle Medal in Australia. He has held numerous directorial
roles including Chief of
Nuclear Physics Division, AFOSR (US
Air Force Office of Scientific Research), Director of the Research School of Physical
Sciences and Engineering (Australian
National University), Chairman, Committee for the
International Survey on Atomic and
Molecular Sciences, Vice-President and Secretary, Australian Academy
of Science and Director
of the Electronic Structure of Materials Centre (Flinders University). He
is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian
Academy of Technological Sciences and
Engineering, the Australian Institute of Physics and the American
Physical Society. In
2006 the new Physics Research building at Australian National
University was named the Erich Weigold Building. He has also published
two major books in the field of atomic physics, edited three
other physics related books and published more than
230 articles for international journals. Professor
Weigold
has a PhD in Nuclear Physics from
Australian National University (1962) and
was awarded the Member of the Order of Australiia in 2009.
